Creating Healthier Holiday Traditions

The holiday season kicks off with a Thanksgiving feast. A feast. That can make it seem impossible to stick with your health goals. Rest assured it is possible to enjoy Thanksgiving without stuffing yourself (leave that to the turkey). Let’s kick off the holiday season with a healthy start.

Manage Your Portions

With a little planning, you can enjoy your Thanksgiving favorites and avoid going to bed ten pounds heavier. Depending on what time of the day you sit down for your big meal, eat a healthy breakfast, and avoid snacking throughout the day. At mealtime, survey the options. Skip the items you don’t enjoy as much, while leaving room to indulge (moderately) in your favorites.

Prepare a Healthier Meal

Rethink your menu this year. Try cooking healthier options of your less healthy family favorites. Roast your vegetables in olive or avocado oil instead of baking them in butter or swap half the potatoes for cauliflower in your mashed potatoes. Consider adding vegetable-forward dishes like roasted squash or a green salad with fruit.

Create Active Traditions

Create a tradition of doing something active. Plan a walking coffee or hot cider date at a local park or path with friends or family members in the morning. Sign up for a turkey trot event. Try our Planksgiving workout, enjoy an early morning pre-meal hike, play a friendly game of touch football before the big meal, or go for a post-meal (pre-dessert) walk around your neighborhood.
