2016 Denver Healthy Communities Awards Finalists Announced

Denver Environmental Health announced the six finalists for the 2016 Denver Healthy Communities Awards. First launched in 2015, the Healthy Communities Awards (HCA) are intended to recognize individuals, as well as public, private, and community organizations working to promote public health and environmental sustainability.
Public and private organizations were among those chosen as the top two finalists in three categories: Innovation, Compliance and Good Neighbor.
The 2016 Healthy Communities Awards finalists include:
Innovation Award Finalists – Designed to recognize individuals and organizations that employ innovative strategies, processes, or technologies to improve public health and/or the environment in Denver.
Weigh and Win – Weigh and Win utilizes verified weight loss data through patented photographed weigh-ins to provide Colorado adults with access to an effective, free weight management platform. Funded primarily by Kaiser Permanente, Weigh and Win works with partners to complement the organization’s other efforts to increase healthy eating and physical activity using weight loss data through patented photographed weigh-ins to provide Colorado adults with access to an effective, free weight management platform.
City Park Time Bank – The City Park Time Bank provides neighbors in City Park with a system of reciprocity which allows neighbor-members to seek assistance and share talents and skills through by trading time. Neighbors share skills from resume writing to sewing/hemming, to garden consultations and more. For every hour given, members receive an hour to spend on services offered in the Time Bank. While there are a handful of Time Banks in Colorado, City Park’s timebank is the first in Denver.
Compliance Award Finalists – Designed to encourage, recognize and reward local individuals, companies, and nonprofit organizations that have consistently met or exceeded applicable standards established through recognized best practices, regulation or certification.
Village Inn (4850 Federal Blvd.) – Located at 4850 Federal Blvd, Village Inn, was chosen for having an excellent compliance history and overall dedication to food safety. As part of this, all staff are required to go through extensive food safety training that takes weeks to complete. By ensuring that the facility operates as a team and is trained in the importance of food safety, the possibly of food safety violations if minimized greatly.
Early Excellence Childcare Program – The Early Excellence Program of Denver promotes and offers high-quality educational services to young children and provides job development and social networks for Colorado’s most vulnerable families so that they may achieve self-sufficiency.
Good Neighbor Award Finalists – Designed to recognize individuals and organizations that have a longstanding commitment to protecting and/or improving the environment in Denver (clean air, land, and water), or promoting healthy people through improved access to healthy food, healthy built environments, or promoting healthy pets through activities at the animal shelter or in the community at-large.
Walk2Connect – Walk2Connect is a Colorado-based social enterprise that creates whole health outcomes through innovative walking programs focused on connection to others, to place and to self. Walk2Connect was started in 2012 by Founder, Jonathon Stalls, after completing the Camino de Santiago in Spain and his 8.5 month 3030 mile walk across the United States in 2010.Since launched, Stalls has grown the organization to having more than 30 same time, same place walks weekly, led by volunteers, throughout Denver and across the Denver metro area, which includes Golden, Boulder, Arvada and Aurora.
Chanda Plan Foundation – The Chanda Plan Foundation demonstrates ongoing commitment and leadership in public health, serving a population of disabled individuals whose health and wellness needs are not currently being met by traditional medical interventions.The Foundation was established in 2005 to improve the quality of life for persons with physical disabilities through direct services and systemic change to access integrative therapies. Executive Director Chanda Hinton-Leichtle founded the organization when she was only 23, and the organization continues to be led by this ambitious young woman whose life was saved through integrative therapies to assist with her own spinal cord injury.
Finalists were chosen by a panel of experts in public and environmental health. Mayor Michael B. Hancock will recognize finalists and announce the winner on April 7 at the Healthy Communities Awards recognition breakfast at the Colorado History Museum.
