Health Links™, a research-to-practice program within the Center for Health, Work & Environment at the Colorado School of Public Health, has partnered with digital health company incentaHEALTH to enhance a digital tool to increase diabetes risk awareness for employers. The goal is to increase availability and accessibility to Diabetes Prevention Programs to employees through employer sponsorship. 11.7% of Colorado adults speak only Spanish, meaning 428,978 Coloradans now have the ability to access the risk tool (Source: Colorado Health Institute). This collaboration addresses health disparities that are crucial in creating an environment in which all employees have the opportunity to be as healthy as possible.
The sixty-second online risk test allows individuals to determine their risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. Deidentified data collected through the risk test will be shared with employers to illustrate the need for and value of preventive programs like the National Diabetes Program.
Prediabetes is a growing issue in America; more than 1 out of 3 adults has prediabetes, and 90% don’t know they have it. Diabetes prevalence among Hispanic/Latino adults in Colorado is 11.1% compared to 6.2% in white adults, showing the need to stratify risk before a diabetes diagnosis. Diabetes is also one the costliest diseases in America with $1 out of every $4 US health care costs being spent on caring for people with the disease. Lifestyle interventions like a National Diabetes Prevention Program can help reduce the risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, which in turn will help decrease health care costs.
